No space for corpses in the Mother City
0 Comments Published January 30th, 2007 in General News. Tags: No Tags.Cape Town is rapidly running out of space to bury its dead, with 27 of its 31 public cemeteries expected to be full within five years.
Only four cemeteries – in Atlantis, Welmoed, Rusthof and Maitland – have “adequate capacity” for more graves beyond 2012.
Although the City of Cape Town is developing six more cemeteries, most of these are being planned for areas earmarked for nature conservation or low-cost housing.
“We have clashed with CapeNature over at least two of the sites,” said Peter de la Hunt, city co-ordinator of cemeteries.
