The January 1806 Battle of Blaauwberg that took place on the stretch of beach now known as Melkbosstrand near Cape Town – has been commemorated by the Cannon Association of South Africa today.
British forces led by Major-General David Baird landed in an area then called Losperd’s Bay sparking a fierce three-day battle with Dutch troops stationed there. The result saw heavy losses of both British and Dutch men in the battle, signalling the start of the second British occupation of the Cape.
